Getting Hyped: Issue #21 of web3🤝education
Hello educator and web3 frens,
As educators, we have seen many fads come and go, especially when it comes to technology. In a recent podcast interview with AI creative Taryn Southern EdSurge editor Jeffrey Young asked if the hype is real around the metaverse, is there a there there? Her answer was a resounding yes.
There are definitely some hardware limitations at the moment. Adoption of metaverse technology is still years off, maybe 10-20 years. There are also a number of intermediary steps that need to unfold first. Southern argues that there will be an AR technology evolution first before we move to a more immersive metaverse experience.
When listening to these experts I often ask myself, "what does this mean for us as educators?". The resources for this week provide some ideas for the forward-thinking educator about where we are heading. It also provides a variety of lenses to see where our young learners will fit into this process of cycling into a metaverse-rich world.
It is important that we familiarize ourselves with the skills that these emerging technologies will demand from the next generation. It is also important that we understand the trends in the market. Where is the creative energy funneling to? And finally, we need to be able to access hubs of innovation to build relationships for ourselves and students.
Click through the resources for the week to learn about some new connections in the web3 and education space.

The Metaverse Makes a Hype Cycle Appearance — skarredghost.com
There's a reason I've made a number of references to the Gardner Hype Cycle. It is a great framework to conceptualize emerging technologies like blockchain and the metaverse. This version for 2022 is interesting because it inserts the individual technologies directly onto the hype curve.
Take a look, and pay particular attention to the placement of NFTs, web3, and the metaverse as they are all on different parts of the curve. These three things are often lumped together (I do it myself), but this graphic is a great way to see that they are all on their own individual trajectories of adoption.
Required Skills and Experience for Entering AI — cult.honeypot.io
I imagine my role as an educator as providing young people the tools to thrive in their world. To make connections between their insides and the world on the outside. One way I can best do that is to understand the types of worlds they will be entering over the next 20 years.
This world will encompass how they play, shop, entertain, and of course work. We spend the majority of our day working so it is important that we engage in something that stimulates our mind, body, and spirit. For many young people, this will be the world of artificial intelligence. This article summarizes what work as an AI engineer may look like.

This is a short press release about the platform mystic.com–a data aggregation and analytics tool for the Web3, NFT, and gaming ecosystems. As I imagine the next generation of creatives participating in the creative economy this information will be vitally important.
There is a movement to develop young people's capacity to understand and process data. Analytics is an emerging field that continues to grow in importance as we have more access to databases of information. The question is what type of data will they be interacting with?
As we imagine a data-driven web3 world, platforms like Mystic have the potential to be a lot more impactful than we currently envision.
HIFI Labs, the Creative Incubator and Artist Mentorship Collective — musically.com
This announcement by HIFI Labs is another signal for emerging artists to start engaging with web3. These cohort-based programs are spaces to collaborate, co-design, and build the next generation of art-driven web3 platforms.
Once again, as I reflect on my role as an educator I have to ask myself, "am I ensuring that the young people in my purview can thrive in the world around them?". I see my role as being part of deep responsibility to help students to access these programs to best position themselves as engaged builders in the creative economy.
