Ed3 Weekly Issue #172: This is the End
Does AI spell the end of education as we know it?
Hello blockchain enthusiasts,
Take a second to absorb these lyrics by Jim Morrison from The Doors:
This is the end
Beautiful friend
This is the end
My only friend, the end
This refrain was written almost 60 years ago, but it still echoes in today’s conversations about the future of education in the age of AI.
But is it really the end?
We’ve heard this before—with motion pictures and radio, which some claimed would replace traditional classroom instruction.
"Books will soon be obsolete in schools... It is possible to teach every branch of human knowledge with the motion picture." - Thomas Edison
The same thing repeated with televisions, personal computers, and the internet. All of these were predicted to revolutionize learning, enabling mass access to knowledge and reducing the need for schools.
So it comes as no surprise that AI is having a similar effect. But is this time really different?
I have a hard time believing it is.
In fact, we now have a stronger understanding of what deep learning truly looks like. Past predictions often assumed that delivering content was the same as learning. But today, we recognize that real learning is built on relationships, identity formation, critical thinking, and social interaction—things AI can’t fully replicate.

Artificial intelligence and the end of college education
This opinion piece sounds the alarm on the unchecked embrace of AI in education. The author explores a world in which universities and tech leaders promise AI-driven transformation and empowerment. Should we be exhibiting some skepticism, especially considering past tech utopias that failed to deliver and emerging research showing how overreliance on AI can weaken critical thinking? With major investments from companies like Microsoft and OpenAI shaping how students learn, the piece is a warning shot about when AI starts doing the work for students, it may also erode the core purpose of education itself.
