Ed3 Weekly Issue #156: AI is A1
Troubling comments from our Secretary of Education shows the deep divide between technological innovation and the desire to "shake things up"
Hello blockchain enthusiasts!
Welcome to a new issue! It’s a crazy time out there in the world today—so crazy that it might have you questioning what’s up and what’s down.
But don’t fret—Ed3 Weekly is here to provide you with the best resources this week from the world of blockchain, AI, and Web3.
One theme I wanted to touch on is the idea of “shaking things up” and disruption. A recent appearance by our Secretary of Education at a major AI event reminded us that sometimes those who want to make the most change are nowhere near qualified to do so.
It wasn’t just the use of the term “A one” when referring to AI. Was it a mistake? Did she actually not know that the acronym for Artificial Intelligence isn’t the same as the name for a steak sauce?
I don’t know.
But what I do know is that much of what came out of her mouth flies in the face of what many in the education field have been working toward.
Have diversity programs “gone too far”? I can’t answer that question, nor is it the scope of what we do here at Ed3 Weekly. But the overall tenor of Mrs. McMahon’s remarks made me uneasy and uncomfortable.
What made me even more uncomfortable was that no one was talking about it! Maybe people just ignored it and focused more on the education innovation and networking they were experiencing. All I know is that as a future forward educator, I want to make sure we have the right people in the room when we’re making big decisions about the next generation.
Here’s to hoping that some of the resources I share this week can help get us there.

Defending Ed. Dept. Cuts, Linda McMahon Says It’s Time to ‘Do Something Different’
🔗 I was shocked at the lack of discussion about Linda McMahon’s appearance at the ASU+GSV conference last week. One person’s appearance shouldn’t overshadow an impactful event like this. A lot of the commentary on my social media feed was positive about their networking, collaborations, and engagement that was experienced at this event.
But much of what was said by our Secretary of Education was rather troubling. Especially her use of the word “A-one” when referring to what we can only assume was “AI.”
What this tells me is that we need to be a little skeptical of those who want to “shake things up” just for the sake of shaking things up. We know we need to change our systems of education, but there are too many who are willing to row out the baby with the bath water. Take a listen to what our Secretary of Education was saying at this event to get a sense of where many of these people’s minds currently are. Read
